I think an animal has been abandoned
An animal being alone does not always mean it has been abandoned. Here is how to look for clues.

It is upsetting to see an animal that seems to have been left behind. Before assuming abandonment, it is worth gently checking a few things — many animals found alone are simply lost, roaming or living outdoors normally.
Lost, roaming or abandoned?
- Cats often roam over a wide area and may be perfectly at home outdoors.
- Dogs escape from gates, gardens and vehicles more often than people expect.
- Some animals live outside near their owner's property and are cared for.
Looking for clues
- Ask neighbours, nearby businesses or regular dog walkers whether they recognise the animal.
- Check for a collar or tag; a vet can scan for a microchip and check SIAC.
- Note the animal's condition — weight, coat, whether it seems used to people.
- Photograph the animal and record exactly where and when you saw it.
If abandonment seems likely
Consider contacting an animal welfare organisation or your Câmara Municipal, and share what you have recorded. Please avoid confronting a suspected owner — it rarely helps the animal and can put you at risk. If the animal is unwell or injured, veterinary advice comes first.
