Bringing your animals to the Algarve

1. Trains — CP (Comboios de Portugal)

The regional railway line running across the Algarve, from Lagos to Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, is relatively accommodating for pets.

Small pets: Pets travelling in a secure carrier or container, treated as hand luggage, can travel free of charge.

Larger dogs travelling outside a carrier: Dogs must be kept on a short leash and securely muzzled. A ticket is required, typically at half the standard fare on Regional and InterRegional services. You should also carry an up-to-date vaccination record or pet passport showing the dog's microchip details.

Important: Animals are not permitted to sit on passenger seats.

2. Regional and Local Buses — VAMUS Algarve & Municipal Networks

Small pets: Small pets enclosed in a suitable transport bag or carrier are generally accepted.

Larger dogs: Larger dogs may be accepted at the driver's discretion, usually outside peak commuter and school hours. Dogs should be leashed and muzzled, and it is advisable to carry their vaccination records.

Because space can be limited, drivers may refuse larger dogs if the bus is already crowded.

3. Taxis and Ridesharing

Regular taxis and standard rideshare drivers in the Algarve may accept or decline pets at their discretion.

A travel towel or blanket to protect the vehicle's seats can help make travelling with a pet easier.

For airport journeys, such as transfers to or from Faro Airport, or when travelling with a large dog, availability can be less predictable. Pre-booking is recommended rather than relying on finding a suitable vehicle at the taxi rank.

4. Dedicated Pet Taxis & Private Transfers

If you need reliable door-to-door transport, particularly for larger dogs, veterinary appointments or airport transfers, dedicated pet transport services can be a useful option.
