Animal Welfare
An animal is in immediate danger — what can I do?
Traffic, heat, water or a trapped animal: quick, practical steps that keep you safe too.
By FOURFEET.guide · 6 September 2026
When an animal is in immediate danger, do what is safe and get help quickly.
Please do not put yourself at risk
Never step into moving traffic, climb into water, or enter unsafe ground or buildings. An animal cannot be helped by a second casualty.
Common situations
- In traffic — if it is safe, warn other drivers, and call for assistance. Do not chase the animal across a road.
- Extreme heat — move the animal to shade where safe, offer small amounts of cool water, and seek veterinary advice quickly. A dog shut in a car in the Algarve sun is an emergency.
- Trapped — in a well, drain, fence or building; note the exact location and call for help rather than forcing a release.
- In water — do not enter the water yourself; call for assistance.
- Seriously injured — contact a veterinary practice or emergency vet straight away.
Who to contact
Use the guide to find the nearest emergency veterinary service, rescue organisation or municipal animal service. GNR/SEPNA, PSP and the Polícia Marítima contacts on the Lost & Found page can also help depending on where the animal is.
