I found a dog in the Algarve — what should I do?

A dog alone may be lost, escaped or abandoned. Here are safe, practical steps to find out.

By FOURFEET.guide · 6 September 2026

Most dogs found alone have escaped or become lost, and their family is usually looking for them.

Approach safely

  • Move slowly and calmly, crouch down and avoid direct eye contact.
  • A frightened dog may run into traffic if chased — never chase.
  • Where it is safe to do so, contain the dog in a garden, yard or vehicle.
  • If you cannot safely contain the dog, note the exact location and direction of travel and call for help.

Look for identification

  • Check for a collar, tag or engraved details.
  • A veterinary practice or authorised service can scan for a microchip and check the SIAC registration.
  • Photograph the dog clearly and record where and when you found it.

Help the family find them

  • Ask nearby houses, shops and dog walkers — many dogs are found very close to home.
  • Report the dog as found on Encontra-me.org and in local lost-and-found groups.
  • Hold back one identifying detail so you can verify anyone who claims the dog.
  • Contact the local Câmara Municipal or CRO, which is where many found dogs are reported.

If the dog is injured

Veterinary help comes first — see our guidance on finding an injured or sick animal, and use the guide to find the nearest emergency vet.
